Family Birthplace Class Descriptions
Baby Care
Provides you with the most current information about caring for a newborn. Teaches how “normal” babies look and act, and when to call the pediatrician with concerns. Class includes hands-on practice bathing, dressing and diapering a baby. Fee: $20 per couple

Babysitting Basics
Provides teenagers (ages 11–15) with the necessary skills to care for infants and children. A parent must sign a permission form for the teenager to participate, and an adult must accompany him or her to class. Fee: $20 per student

Breastfeeding
Provides the most current information and sensitive guidance for successful breastfeeding. Fathers and grandparents are encouraged to participate.

Cesarean Birth
Provides information about cesarean sections, including when this procedure is necessary, types
of anesthesia used and what to expect during the procedure. Information on post-surgical recovery and care is included, as is orientation of The Family Birthplace. This class is appropriate for both first-time mothers and for those having a repeat cesarean section. Fee: $20 per couple

Childbirth Preparation
Offered in both English and Spanish. Provides the most current information about pregnancy, labor and postpartum recovery. Includes relaxation methods, comfort measures and breathing techniques to prepare you for labor. Information about the risks and benefits of certain medical procedures — including epidurals, medications, episiotomies and cesarean sections — also is included to help you make informed childbirth choices. Hospital orientation is included. Mothers-to-be are encouraged
to bring their labor coaches, along with two pillows and a blanket. The class is presented in several different formats with various days and times to meet your needs. Fee: $50 per couple for any class or series (includes workbook)

Provides updated information about labor and delivery for those who have given birth before. Includes limited practice on breathing techniques and comfort measures, as well as hospital orientation and workbook. Family Birthplace Orientation
In this “virtual tour” of The Family Birthplace, participants can see our home-like private suites, nursery, cesarean section rooms and recovery rooms on video. Instruction also is provided on where to go and what to expect upon admission to the hospital. Fee: No charge

For Those Who Want More
A labor rehearsal review for those who have completed a childbirth class. Emphasis is placed on relaxation and comfort measures. Mothers-to-be are encouraged to bring their labor coaches. Fee: Free to those who have completed a childbirth class through Memorial Healthcare System; $20 for all others

Designed to teach new grandparents how childbirth and infant care have changed through the years. Participants are encouraged to share stories and concerns.

Healthy Pregnancy
Promotes a safe, healthy and comfortable pregnancy. Various topics are discussed, including comfort measures for pregnancy, methods for preventing preterm labor and danger signs. Expectant mothers and their partners are encouraged to take this class as early in the pregnancy as possible. Fee: $20

Infant CPR
Offered in both English and Spanish. Provides hands-on training for CPR and choking prevention for infants up to one year of age. Fee: $20 per couple

Infant Massage
Offered in both English and Spanish. Infant massage can enhance the parent-child bond, reduce colic and lead to more healthy development. Bring your baby to this interactive class, conducted by an infant massage therapist. Book and massage oil are provided. Fee: $50 per couple. Pre-payment is required no later than one month prior to class.

Nursing Moms Support Group
This ongoing support group offers breastfeeding guidance and encouragement by board-certified lactation consultants. Participants should bring their babies. Fee:

Siblings
A fun, interactive program that teaches siblings-to-be age 3 or older how to become “big brothers” and “big sisters.” Basic information is presented about pregnancy and delivery. Parents should plan to stay with their children. Fee: $20 per family

Classes through The Family Birthplace at Memorial Hospital Miramar are free or have a nominal fee.
We request payment for classes in advance. Please call (954) 538-5180 to register for classes and arrange for payment.
If the fee of a class is a concern for you, call us at (954) 538-5180. Receipt for payment, if needed, will be given on the day of the class.
